Here is what Spinlock says on their website about why lines slip.
According to the specs, the XTS is rated for 2200 pounds. The one
slipping on me is the outhaul line. The line is becoming damaged as a
result of this slippage. They recommend flushing these clutches with
fresh water and applying ocassional silicone lube.
There are several reasons possible: a) The load exceeds that which the
clutch was designed for - the clutch is designed to slip at the
maximum load rather than damage the rope. This maximum is at least as
much as other makes of clutch. We suggest you do one of the following:
I) Sleeve line to a greater diameter at grip position. Diameter is the
biggest factor in holding. ii) Use a good quality rope - loose covers
are not effective for holding. iii) You may simply have too much load
for a clutch, see product info on the new Powerclutch XX or ZS jammer
- both can hold full working load of any hi-tech line. b) The cam in
your clutch is either worn or it is an older design not designed for
modern ropes. All Spinlock clutches, even 12 years old, can be
upgraded with new cam modules.
