I don't have a whole lot of answers for you, but did see this cool referenc=

It turns out the mast head sheave for the main halyard is configured incorr=
ectly for a mast furling main. Instead of the halyard routing directly int=
o the center of the mast, it comes out the back like it would for a traditi=
onal mainsail.
=20
Instead of correcting this, the dealer at commissioning apparently just rou=
ted the halyard around and back into the mast, however it ends up having to=
turn a couple of 90 degree angles, and of course binds up (can't raise or =
lower with the halyard). They must have gone through some heroic but misgu=
ided efforts to get the sail up in the first place. Now I've got to figure=
out how to get the masthead reconfigured, and who is going to pay for it? =
The dealer who no longer is a Catalina representative? Catalina? Charles=
ton Spar? or me? Any thoughts on how to proceed?
=20
Meanwhile it's spring, and were stuck at the dock.

I don't know why you can't get your mainsail to drop, I did have a similar =
problem with the loop on the tack of our main failing. There was a burr on=
the stainless steel hook to which the tack attaches. Eventually the burr =
wore through the nylon webbing which is the tack and it failed. I had it r=
epaired at a local sail loft. I don't remember any problem dropping the ma=
in. As others have already said, it sounds as if you need to send someone =
up the mast to look at your pulleys at the mast head. =20

Hi there, I had a similar problem on a Newport 30 many years ago - a jamme=

dge off the pulley on the top of the mast and the wire had slipped between =
two pulleys on the axle and jammed at the transition from wire to spliced l=
ine. Turned out that the pulleys were a heavy 'nylon type composite' which=
was clearly unsuitable for such for the purpose - the boat was about 8 or =
9 years old at the time. The rigger had a hard time getting the axle out be=
cause it was under pressure and perhaps a little bent because I had winched=
on the main halyard very tight at some stage. Initially I had winched my =
wife up in a bosun's seat to see what had happened and then called the rigg=
er. I took the mainsail off the boom and wrapped it around the mast so far =
as was possible to keep it from flapping around for a few days while all th=
is was happening. I replaced the axle and pulleys with much heavier metal =
units and did not have the problem again. Incidentally I still see heavy ny=
lon pulleys at West Marineand wonder why they are still available? Perhaps =
they dont need to be lubricated? Perhaps we should have the top of the mas=

oubt you will be able to define the problem. Good luck, and cheers, Geoff.=

This past weekend during a moderate 16 kt gust, the loop at the Tack of our=
Furling Mainsail that fastens the foot to the hook on the rolling furler p=
arted with a loud pop. The boat and sail is 4 yrs old.
=20
Has anyone experienced this failure?
=20
When I went to lower the mainsail (for the first time since owning the boat=
) to remove it and take it to a sail loft for repair I found that it would =
not lower. With the sail unfurled, slack in the outhaul and furler, and th=
e main halyard clutch released I could not get the main to budge. Thoughts=
are either a jam of the halyard in the mast or at the top of the mast, or =
a jam of the sail in the furler track.
=20
Has anyone experienced this, or have recommendations?
